“As long as there is a team at the Man O’War, there will always be a pitch” was the promise made by Nicky Rooney upon the founding of the club. The original pitch on the Rooney land was adjacent to our current location. Along with the many great men, women and families who got behind the club, the granting of the first pitch was a hugely significant part of our club’s evolution. In recent years, Pat Rooney assisted the club when we were purchasing additional land for our second pitch.
On Saturday 17th November 2018 on the historic occasion of our Senior Men’s team being promoted to Division 3 football – the highest level a Men’s team has ever played – the club presented the Rooney family with a gift “In Recognition of the contribution of the Rooney Family to Man O’War GFC”. The presentation was accepted by Pat Rooney.
Today, our club is fielding two Senior Men and two Senior Women’s teams, with the Ladies having reached Division 2 football. This year we also fielded teams at Minor, U16s, U14s, U12s, U11s, U10s, U9s and U8s for girls and for boys and we have a vibrant Nursery Section.
A sincere thank you from all of us to the Rooney family.
